When one is contemplating the need for counseling or psychotherapy they may struggle with at least two issues:
In answering the first question, consider the reasons others have successfully sought out treatment. The list of life issues is a long one and of course all cannot be included in this web space. They range from dissatisfaction in life to deep despair BUT include so many areas in between. These may include: not being happy with oneself, having unsatisfying relationships, struggling with a mental illness requiring medical intervention, difficulty dealing with grief related to any loss, feeling overwhelmed with parenting issues or dealing with elderly parents and their needs. However, the list goes on and on. In response to the second dilemma referred to above, when seeking out professional assistance is it truly a sign of weakness when you have made the courageous decision that you WANT change and WILL NOT settle for anything less? The fact of the matter is that you are making a bold decision to confront "fear" and are open to change. Always remember that you are forever developing and growing! We all are! When you seek out assistance, you are not giving up the role of being the "expert" of your life. No one can, will, or should take that away from you. Psychotherapy or counseling is merely utilizing a safe place where change is possible. Remember, all of us will have more than one serious life challenge. Use this form of professional assistance to allow the "expert" within yourself to be assisted. |
